Veterans Day - refreshed and vivid

Today, there is a deserved fervor of honoring vets blasting our eyes, hearts and minds. Yet our mercurial love/disgust of vets (fighting capital) is historical and cyclical. We honored vets by giving them the benefits, ed, and HC to fight and protect YET we cyclically failed them as a mature society by discarding them like damaged plastic toy soldiers. Why? Because these damaged soldiers do not fit or meet the general societal human capital profile needs or wants.

Reflection... From WWI through Vietnam, soldiers were drafted as fighting human capital & told to go and fight for your country. Thus these fighters/protectors were again viewed with this love/disgust of general society, because they were doing their mandatory job only to become damaged mentally and physically in protecting/fighting for our nation. Upon their return businesses were not prepared to handle the onslaught of the returning damaged human capital & neither was the general non-damaged society, we all wanted things to pick-up where they left-off perfect. The perfect storm was drawn, damaged fighters yearning for acceptance & jobs while the general societal capital wanted no disruption of their new paradigm. Therefore this storm was treated & labeled as untenable,unproductive and too costly for society, and we sloughed off the damaged human capital to the vet hospital or other institutions, paid all the glossy billboard organizations to take care & fix, we felt good, complete and proud.

Today's storm... The only change of the current wars/conflicts/disputes/from previous times, is these are fueled with volunteer fighting capital. These volunteers came from the massive populations of presently distressed human capital pools seeking money to make ends meet with the promise of benefits, ed, & HC and jobs upon return. Now the story repeats like the OUROBOROS eating its tail however today they are welcomed with REAL broken promises of benefits, ed, HC & jobs for this new distressed & damaged human capital general society has no REAL solutions.

So, as we wave our flags and thank all vets loudly, remember this is one day & thanks is abound. YET one day does not improve the life for the distressed & damaged human capital or general society life's if we cannot commit supporting to our distressed & damaged human capital PERIOD. Similar to the OUROBOROS, our mercurial attitudes for ALL damaged human capital is amplified on this Veterans Day and forever for this writer.

The Thin Man - Depp going for depth - who will be his Nora?

Saddened we will get a remake of such classics - Powell & Loy still light the screen with their quick banter & ability to have fun. Not sure about this one. http://blog.moviefone.com/2010/10/20/johnny-depp-the-thin-man-remake-rob-marshall/

The Saturday Big Tent Wedding PartyThe Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party by Alexander McCall Smith

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A wonderful revist to Botswana and the cast of characters. As always, Smith comfortably carrys us through the final days of Makutsi single life,coupled with events to teach and enrich all characters. A great trip experienced while sitting on my sofa dreaming of Gabrone and strong family values. This book ends and I remain smiling - thanks Smith!

Pym: A NovelPym: A Novel by Mat Johnson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Solid 4 - a story of B & W that will play forever. Heard about this book on Fresh Air, when M Johnson did the interview, and was intrigued and anxious to see how he dissects Poe. What catagory? Satire, fantasy, racial, roller-coaster, and reminiscent tones of Walter Mosley & Octavia Butler dealing with African/Colored/Black disapora.

A Red Herring Without Mustard (Flavia de Luce, #3)A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Solid 3.5 = Love Flavia series - Comments: good however would like to see some maturity of Flavia as compared to book 1&2. Seems to drag about 3/4th point of book. Many issues facing her and family yet she still wears that precocious cloak while other are evolving/maturing around her. Great characters, scenery, and storyline... Having a hard time finishing this one VS the others.

Movie - FLINT COLLECTION - Love me some FLINT

Flint does what BOND could'nt do - have fun at himself. Storyline: Super-spy Flint takes on a cabal of women plotting to rule the world. - If you have not viewed these 1967 classics - have fun and see. Pure escapism - a couple of lines are priceless - Lisa asks - "why do women find you so irresistible Mr Flint?" FLINT's reply - "Its simple, I don't compete with them." BANG-ON!..
Flint finds that the president has been replaced by an actor Flint's line[with a wistful look] is "An Actor as President?" See more: In Like Flint

Womens Futures????

Great article by Melissa Harris-Perry - "Using small-government, libertarian rhetoric, the Tea Party ushered in a new crop of Republican leaders under the banner of fiscal responsibility. But the aggressive antichoice legislation coming from the new GOP majority in the House makes perfectly clear that belt-tightening deficit reduction is entirely compatible with an older social agenda committed to pushing American women out of the public sphere." Rants - Raves and WHY

I got this in my e-inbox and pissed me off:
Dear Newsmax Reader,
The average American works three months a year, WITHOUT PAY, for the federal government.
If you are in a higher tax bracket, you could be spending up to half your life working for Uncle Sam.
And how is your money being spent? According to a recent report from The Heritage Foundation . . .

Taxes we all hate them - but taxes provide $$ for schools, roads, and other infrastructure. When the Higher Bracket fails to pay, what they reaped; the building of the nation is left to the middle bracket - they are just poor from being drained by the higher and the lower brackets.

Movie - Ageless/Timeless Actor - on my top 5 list

We remember actor William Powell ("The Thin Man," "The Kennel Murder Case," "My Man Godfrey," "Life with Father"), who passed on this day (March 5) in 1984. Be sure to click "Like" if you're a fan of William Powell or like his movies!

Bury Your Dead (Armand Gamache, #6)Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Throughly enjoyed this book by Louise Penny. Her character Inspectr Gamache was developed and smooth as a fine single malt scotch or tea. The story finalizes the acts from previous book yet you do not need to read the previous book to enjoy this story. Wrongs are correct, people helped, and are people hurt. Penny does a fine job of character development, locale development and words. For example, Emiles words of wisdon to younger Gamache, words said once in his career never to be repeated. - "I'm sorry. I was wrong. I need help. I don't know."- eloquently stated and utlised! Give this a read and br prepared to escape into Quebec (French/Anglo)in dead winter. Fire, blanket, comfy chair, glass of wine/tea and book just envelope you into the worlds of Gamache.

Words of Love - Valentine Special

Kahlil Gibran-On Love-1923 -

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep,
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire,
that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart,
and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say,
'God is in my heart,' but rather,
'I am in the heart of God.'
And think not you can direct the course of love,
for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night,
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) was born to a Maronite Catholic family on January 6, 1883 in Besharri, Lebanon.

Lit, Lit, and Bit...

~Name the Author via their Death: sentenced to hang by the Czar after the failed Decemberist revolt. When it was his time to get strung up, the rope snapped. As is customary, it was considered divine intervention and he was set free. His remarks as the rope broke: "You see, in Russia they don't know how to do anything properly, not even how to make rope!"
~Name the Author via their Death: Jumped from a bridge over the Mississippi River; reputedly waved at passersby on way down. "We must travel in the direction of our fear."

The Bishop Murder CaseThe Bishop Murder Case by S.S. Van Dine

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Solid 5 - major SSVan Dine fan so not much he could do wrong for me. Vance the ultimate detective - enlightened, intelligent & witty diletttant. van Dine was the golden age of detection and to this day he tops my list of detective work sans amour. Current detective stories seem to miss the overall allure & appeal Vance possessed Yes, times have passed yet I find comfort in Vance and his side kick - VanDine for solving a crime and dinner at the club.

Wet Grave (Benjamin January, Book 6)Wet Grave by Barbara Hambly

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Gave this book 100 pages and could not care about the protagonist. A sweeping novel detailing of LA in prime slave-times 1800's. Beautiful details of French/Spanish LA, slave life,debauchery and murder. Sadly I could not get into this book, it did not flow or reach a rhythm/pace. Found writing clear, lavishly descriptive and odd paced/slow. Would I rec. to others, depends on their mood and taste. Will try another to see if I can like January...

Murder in the OzarksMurder in the Ozarks by Steve Weems

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Solid 3.5 - An interesting storyline of work, life strange unexpected journeys, redemption and murder. Set in Ozarks with a ton of local markers for those of us who know the area, it kept me engaged and wanting to reading more. Somewhere about mid-point, I figured the murderer and why. Would recc to folks wanting some local flavor of Ozarks and its local people with a solid mystery backdrop. As a Ozark bookstore owner, I would rec to locals and especially tourists looking for a good read of and about Ozarks. Good Job Steve!

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Solid 4. - Gets you interested and then continues to keep you hooked throughout. This book kept getting recc by several customers as a must read and really not YA fiction - agree with them. The writing and concepts are adult complexity and construction. Something about about this storyline was reminiscient of Lord of Flies YET this version is government backed. Would I read another, maybe...would I recc, you bet

21Jan - Daily Feed

As we are feverishly prepped for the POTUS upcoming address, we ponder the betide. I suspect it depends on what side of the isle you reside. Sad to use sides when we as a nation collectively need to ride the elephants facing us... Oh well, we shall see and or be told something- real or fantasy and left in angst. As for the other elephants in the room, HC, Education, Economy, Energy, and etc. - these pachyderms do not need to be hunted and killed yet simply ridden by responsible, thoughtful, intelligent, and humble leaders into new territory.  Somehow I keep hearing the MLK quote ringing in my head... "Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal." As we watch our partisian leaders attempt to create new laws/regs with the guise - "of the people, by the people I somehow get the it's feeling against the people..."

~Word: Betide (bi-TYD) MEANING: verb tr., intr.: To happen.  Earliest documented use: 1297.

19Jan - Daily Feed - Ranconteur to Poet/Writer

One of Americas & mine greatest favorite ranconteur was born today - 1887 - Alexander Woollcott,  born in Phalanx, New Jersey. He reviewed plays for The New York Times until the First World War. The tyrannical Sheridan Whiteside in Kaufman and Hart's play The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939) was modeled on Woollcott. "There is no such thing in anyone's life as an unimportant day. "-AWolcott
Thank you Mr Poe: Excerpt from The Raven -Pub 1845 - Still haunting, evermore...
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
" 'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door;
Only this, and nothing more."

18Jan - Daily Feed

MLK day was marked with poignant speeches - positive and negative. The media attempted offer us the breath of both perspectives YET my litmus test was left wanting -Would MLK be proud of us right now? Would he approve of our rhetoric and virulent tones? Would he approve of the state our children?  As a man of non-violence who focused on equality & rights,  poor & downtrodden and hurting, he would certainly be perplexed as to our future - I could hear him saying this today as a reminder: "Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal."- MLK

~Birthday:1867- Rubén Darío, born in Metapa, Nicaragua. He's one of the greatest poets in the Spanish language. Scholars say that there is not a single writer in English that's had as much effect on English literature as Rubén Darío has had on Spanish lit.; 1779 - Peter Mark Roget, born in London, England. As a 61 years old physician and lexicographer, who retired from his medical practice, he decided to devote his retirement to publishing a system of classifying words into groups, based on their meanings. And that became the Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases, published in 1852; A.A. Milne, born in London (1882). He's the author of Winnie-the-Pooh (1926). ~Thought:"Wherever they go, and whatever happens to them on the way, in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest a little boy and his Bear will always be playing."-AAMilne

Today we observe MLK BD with speeches, and reflections of a past leader. Our ongoing challenge from MLK is to live each day improving, listening and postively growing each other in hopes of grooming a nation of leaders. "Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality." -MLK  - Thank You Dr. King!

Days of Reflection

Here in Ozarks we have been hit with cold and ugly since Sunday evening causing schools and people remain indoors. For this time period, I have read two books, baked, watched the one-eye monster and reflected on the on-going rhetoric flaunted endlessly.
The events of Sat have rightfully occupied the news chat in light of the alleged assassins SILENCE on the matter. As the media walks the tight line of news and wagging, I somehow think the killer is laughing at us all! His silence has drawn nothing but speculation , yet he laughs. We all know words have power, the most venal to the most spiritual utilize this power each time they speak, write or act knowing they are looking for an effect of their words on someone or something. My hope is we all realize the power that exists within each of us - good /evil. The assassin knows he holds the power right now and he knows that speaking will diminish his power over us. He knows we are all grasping to understand his actions - power. He sits and waits for us to politically cannibalize each other with speculations, accusations, and gaffs - he laughs!  This assassin has held the spotlight since Sat and we still know nothing of the why - power.
Many other items are facing our nation/world - Haiti, contaminated water, Gitmo, fish&fowl dropping from sky, Afghanistan, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Pakistan, budget cuts, HC and the list goes on... and we continue to give this assassin power by our speculations and empty rhetoric. I suggest we focus on those killed and maimed from this event and take this assassin out of the spotlight where he belongs. Almost a month (Dec 14) we witnessed another assassination attempt on the FL school board by a everyday Joe with a gun. The Dtr killed in a KC church because of his occupation. Have we forgotten so soon?
As for the toxic politico enviro, you bet we are toxic, polarized, angry and searching for the red/blue pill to somehow place blame on one party, a belief, and or instuition. We believe our leaders must step-up and or man-up and lead this troubled nation - not going to happen folks!  A true leader will rise when the people most need them and now is not time because we the people are not ready to be lead by anyone (except the megacorps marketing machines)!
So as I write this sitting in my warm house and looking out into the cold, white and brown valley around my house, may this assassin sit somewhere in the cold, hungry, obsure and dark like many homeless are doing right now until he fades back into nothingness - I am sure many of our homeless would love a warm bunk, food and ammenities.
